Coppicing courses

Introductory 1 or 2 day coppicing courses, covering basic theory, providing hands-on practical experience and a tree identification session. The sessions are set in an Ancient Forest Woodland Reserve, near Malvern, Worcestorshire. With lunch over an open fire!.

TWO DAY COPPICING COURSE

The two day coppicing courses I run are an introduction to coppicing. They are a mixture of theory and practical sessions which include tree identification.

The training courses start with a walk through the woods looking at various compartments that have been coppiced over the last ten years and the benefits of coppicing and the differences between native deciduous woodland and conifer plantations.

Aspect scovered on the course include planning the work area, looking at various devices and horses, building work breaks and coppice restoration, working methods, practical coppicing, material selection, processing, and storage.

Good quality sharp tools will be provided. A certificate and full course notes along with a tree identification guide are included in the course fee.

There is a maximum of 6 people on each course.

It costs £95 for the two days. A £20 deposit is required.

ONE DAY PRACTICAL COPPICING COURSE

The one day coppicing courses I run are an introduction to coppicing. The course includes practical coppicing, material selection, processing, and storage. There is a maximum of 8 people on each course.

The course duration is one day, usually on a Saturday.

It costs £45 for the day.

ONE DAY COPPICE MANAGEMENT THEORY AND TREE IDENTIFICATION

The one day coppicing theory courses I run are an introduction to coppicing for woodland owners and others who have no experience of coppicing and are interested in traditional woodlands and their management. There is a maximum of 8 people on each course.

It costs £65 for the day.

SUMMER WORKSHOP IMPROVEMENT WEEKENDS

I will be in the woods in the summer improving my workshop facilities and getting ready for the start of the coppicing season. I hold workshop improvement weekends a couple of times in the summer. Would you like to spend some time in the woods whilst doing something constructive? The cost is £10 to cover insurance and food.

my courses are ideal for woodland owners, volunteers and anyone else who is interested in traditional woodlands and their management by coppicing and would like to gain more knowledge.

A £10 reduction is available to Malvern Hills Coppice Network and Malvern Hills Conservators volunteers

My courses take place at Ravenshill Woodland Reserve, Alfrick, Worcestershire, which is a 50 acre privately owned nature reserve, which has a patchwork of diverse habitat including many indicator species of ancient semi-natural woodland. It has both deciduous and various conifer species.

Camping is available in the wood for course participants on two day courses at a cost of £6 per night per person. There are also some excellent hotels and B&B'S locally. Please go the links page for local accommodation.
